The Ultimate Drainage, Plumbing & Roofline Glossary
Confused by drainage industry terms? From fatbergs and invert levels to EPDM rubber seals and P-traps, master engineer Jimmy explains the exact technical terminology behind every block and repair.
Branch Pipe Plumbing
A secondary horizontal or vertical pipe that collects wastewater from multiple fixtures (such as a kitchen sink, dishwasher, and washing machine) and connects it into the main 110mm soil stack or drainage run.
Buchan Trap (Interceptor Trap) Drainage
A traditional water-sealed U-bend chamber located just before a property's drainage system connects to the main public sewer. It prevents foul sewer gases and rats from entering household drains. Often prone to silting up in older Victorian terraces.
CCTV Drain Survey Diagnostics
A high-definition fiber-optic camera inspection pushed through underground pipework to locate structural defects, root ingress, cracked joints, or persistent blockages without exploratory excavation.
EPDM Rubber Seal Guttering
A high-grade synthetic rubber gasket fitted inside uPVC gutter union brackets and corner angles. It provides a watertight seal during thermal expansion and contraction. When perished by roof grit, joints begin to drip.
Fatberg / Soap Block Drainage
A solid mass formed in sewers or 40mm waste pipes by the combination of solidified cooking fats, oils, grease (FOG), wet wipes, and calcium-rich hard water minerals. Highly prevalent across Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire.
Rainwater Gully Drainage
An external ground-level drain pot fitted with a grating that collects surface water from roof downpipes or patio areas and channels it into the underground stormwater system or soakaway.
High-Pressure Water Jetting Equipment
A professional van-mounted pump system delivering 3,000 to 4,000 PSI of water through a specialized multi-directional nozzle. It scours pipe walls completely clean of fatbergs, scale, and silt.
Lateral Drain Responsibility
An underground drain pipe that runs outside a property boundary (often shared with neighbours or passing under adjacent land) before connecting to the public sewer main. Managed by regional water authorities like Anglian Water.
Manhole / Inspection Chamber Drainage
An access point built into an underground drainage system allowing engineers to drop CCTV cameras, rods, or high-pressure jetting hoses to clear blockages and inspect pipe junctions.
P-Trap / U-Bend Trap Plumbing
A curved U-shaped section of pipe installed directly beneath sinks, basins, and baths. It holds a small pool of water (the water seal) that blocks sewer odors and drain insects from rising into rooms.
Rat Blocker Pest Control
A marine-grade stainless steel one-way valve installed inside an inspection chamber or manhole. It allows wastewater to exit freely while permanently preventing brown rats from swimming up from the public sewer into private pipes.
Soakaway Drainage
An underground excavated pit or crate system filled with rubble or cellular attenuation units that allows surface rainwater collected from roof gutters to slowly filter back into the surrounding subsoil.
Soil Stack (Soil & Vent Pipe - SVP) Plumbing
The main vertical 110mm pipe that carries foul sewage and wastewater from upstairs toilets, baths, and basins down to the underground drains, while venting sewer gases safely above roof level.
Swan-Neck Downpipe Guttering
The double offset bend at the top of a roof rainwater downpipe that connects the overhanging horizontal gutter trough back to the vertical wall pipe. A primary bottleneck for trapped roof moss and leaves.
Thermostatic Cartridge Plumbing
The precision internal brass and wax valve mechanism inside a thermostatic shower mixer. It automatically expands and contracts to blend hot and cold water supplies, protecting against scalding.
