How to Unblock a Badly Blocked Toilet Without a Plunger

There is nothing quite as panic-inducing as flushing the toilet and watching the water level rise dangerously close to the rim. If you find yourself facing a blocked toilet in the middle of the night and don’t have a plunger on hand, don't panic.

Before you call for emergency drainage clearance, there are a few highly effective DIY methods you can try using everyday household items.

1. The Washing-Up Liquid and Hot Water Trick

This is the plumber’s favorite DIY secret for breaking down organic blockages and excess toilet paper.

  • Step 1: Squirt a generous amount of standard washing-up liquid (about half a mug full) directly into the toilet bowl. The soap acts as a lubricant to help the blockage slide through the pipework.

  • Step 2: Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to seep into the blockage.

  • Step 3: Fill a bucket with hot water from the tap. Never use boiling water from the kettle, as the extreme heat can crack the porcelain of your toilet bowl.

  • Step 4: Pour the hot water straight down into the bowl from waist height. The combination of the heat, the slippery soap, and the force of the water pouring from a height is often enough to push the blockage right through.

2. The Wire Coat Hanger Method

If the blockage is close to the surface, you can fashion a makeshift drainage rod out of a wire coat hanger.

  • Step 1: Unwind a wire coat hanger until it is relatively straight, but leave the hook at the end intact.

  • Step 2: Wrap a small cloth or rag around the hook and secure it tightly with tape. This prevents the sharp wire from scratching your toilet bowl.

  • Step 3: Gently push the wire down the waste pipe and twist it to break up or hook onto the obstruction (such as a flushed wet wipe or sanitary product).

What You Should NEVER Do

  • Do not keep flushing. If the water isn't going down, flushing again will only cause the bowl to overflow onto your bathroom floor, turning a simple blockage into a hazardous bio-waste clean-up.

  • Avoid harsh chemical unblockers. Pouring corrosive chemicals into a completely blocked toilet is dangerous. If the chemical doesn't clear the blockage, you are left with a bowl full of toxic, burning water that will make it incredibly hazardous for an engineer to work on later.
